WHAT WOULD JESUS BUY? The producers who now own our movie have never once, in the three years since they bought it - not once have they contacted us. They are selling it SOMEWHERE in the super mall in the sky. But don’t they understand: this is not a product. This is a cause. We’re trying to prevent the SHOPOCALYPSE! So here at the high holy days of our theological year, “Buy Nothing Day,” - we decided to bootleg our own film.

Rev Billy and the Stop Shopping Gospel Choir at Occupy Wall Street

Al Jazeera came along for our “Excorcism of the Bank of America” last week.  We wanted to

preach some BIG BANK SPECIFICS.  B of A, according to Rainforest Action Network,

is the top financier of CO-2 emissions industries, including mountaintop removal, tar

sands, hydro-fracking…   This bank hurts people and the Earth.

We’ll take our money to out  Amen?  Revolujah!

The change that is in the air, that we all feel. No-one really knows why we are blessed with the common feeling. This same slaughter of the innocents has gone on for so long. This same mystical financing of poisoned farms, of dead oceans, of cancerous children and national false emotions - all this comes at us now as a bad surprise. We have a fresh rage. We have a shout that is honest, thousand of us. We are occupying our civic institutions stolen so long ago by men in suits, and surrounded by confused police. All at once, we want a better life and don’t want to wait. Then this discovery: It is a better life to demand a better life! Revolujah!

There’s a term for the present American system: “Totalizing.” That means that consumerism/militarism comes all the way across the landscape - into every nook and cranny. It kills all the smaller systems, like the neighborhood economies, the gift-economies. This system is self-propelled to come into the arts, into medicine, into libraries, into our intimacy - and into our children’s lives at the beginning of identity.

At the Occupation of Wall Street you really feel this. Liberty Plaza is a small park where we say we’re free of that system. The difference is so dramatic. We are starting a culture here - a way of life from scratch. It is clumsy and beautiful and frustrating. But no-one regrets being here and everyone knows what leaving this small island means. Go back into America and our freedom is portable, hidden near our hearts.

MASTER-OF-THE-UNIVERSE MATH EQUATIONS…

…up in 80-story Wall Street buildings enforce a humanity-free zone around them. Not much human culture up there near the secret codes of their speculations. Authority structures are militaristic, with the usual farting swearing macho buddy stuff. But they see us in the windows. Oh we’ve got equality down here, & some fearless tender touching. Revolujah!

DAY THIRTEEN of LIBERTY PLAZA. And so tomorrow, Thursday, is the two week anniversary of this new culture. We’ll be there singing at 6 PM. Anybody see the piece in the Times? Cover story about Spain, India, Israel - the public squares filling with angry joyous tent-towns. The writer never mentions Wall Street.

Let’s get up from our computer, get out of our cars, come down from whatever fundamentalism keeps our America old and violent and profit-taking - and go down to the public square that sits there covered with pigeon shit and the shadow of a soldier on a horse - and sing the 1st Amendment! Start our culture over! REVOLUJAH!

Hope you get Revved from the Freak Storm! See you downtown!
